Alchemy: The Great Work
by Cherry Gilchrist

I thought I would take the time today to set up a section in our journal of books and music La Luna Bruja is inspired by. I hope that by sharing our favorites with you, you'll get to know us just a little better.

The first book that I thought I would share with you is a smaller book, only 137 pages, and it's a great beginners book about alchemy. I find learning and reading a brief history of any topic only helps me understand when delving deeper into any subject.

So... how, you may ask, does the study of alchemy inspire soap making?  While I do love the idea of the divine element gold in our products (and several of them do contain gold),  this is where the fascinating spiritual side of alchemy comes into play. In alchemy the act of combining materials parallels personal transformation. What you put into your life (or soap), the elements you choose (pure, natural, synthetic, rare, or common) can become a reflection of life itself. I enjoy using and combining herbs, spices, oils, and flowers with purpose and for a purpose. This may sound corny but holding a piece of soap in your hand is like holding a little piece of us. Yes, we try put that much into what we do (interject a *smiley face* here if reading that makes you a little uncomfortable).

I'll touch more on the subject in other entries. I don't want this to become a "TMI" article. Ha!

Here is a link to the book if you are interested in sharing a good read with us. Please let us know what you think of the book if you do read it!
